Pilots Insurance

If you die, get killed, hunted down, self destruct, or just slammed into a space station by a malfunctioning docking computer, then you will be given an opportunity to rebuy your ship by paying an 'insurance' cost derived from the ship's purchase cost.

Upon the destruction of your ship an insurance screen will be displayed giving the option to repurchase your (now destroyed) ship's loadout, or to choose a free Sidewinder (loaned to you from the Pilots Federation). If you do not have enough credits to repurchase your old loadout, you will be given an opportunity to take out a loan that scales to your highest Pilots Federation rank. If the player cannot repurchase their old loadout even with loans, they will be forced to choose the Sidewinder, and lose their old ship and its loadout.

When a commander's ship receives catastrophic hull damage (breaks apart) or becomes incapable of supporting life, the commander automatically escapes via an ever-present, indestructible escape pod. The escape pod transports the commander back to the last station that they docked at.[1] Galactic Insurance provides your pilots insurance to help you to rebuy your old ship loadout at reduced cost or you can take a basic sidewinder for free.[2]

The Cockpit Voice-Activated System is issued as standard by the Pilots Federation in accordance with statute B7249 of the Interstellar Transit Charter. For insurance purposes it is illegal to travel in most systems without the use of COVAS technology.[3]

The following table shows the approximate purchase and insurance cost for ships and equipment. Also note that the insurance is 5% of the cost of the ship, and all other items.
